Create a Stylish Homemade Dog Collar for Your Pup

Dog Collar

Are you tired of generic dog collars that lack personality? Do you want to make a statement while keeping your furry friend safe and comfortable? Look no further! In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of creating a unique, adjustable dog collar that will make heads turn. Let’s get started!

Customizing Your Dog’s New Collar

A few weeks ago, my mischievous puppy decided to chew on my older dog’s collar, rendering it destroyed. Determined to provide my dog with a stylish and durable replacement, I set out to make a custom adjustable collar.

Dog Collar Measure

To begin, I measured the length of the old collar and added an extra 12 inches to accommodate the buckles and slide adjuster. I opted for a 1-inch-wide nylon webbing in the center of the collar for added strength. To make it more visually appealing, I cut a fabric strip measuring 4 ½ inches wide to cover the webbing.

Gathering Your Supplies

Assemble the following materials to bring your homemade dog collar to life:

  • Strap Adjuster to fit 1-inch-wide strap
  • Parachute Buckle to fit 1-inch-wide strap
  • D-ring to fit 1-inch-wide strap
  • ½ yard of fabric (I chose a fun dotted print cotton fabric)
  • Wonder Clips by Clover
  • Wonderfil Flash Reflective Thread
  • 90/14 Jeans Needles
  • Jeans foot #8/8D
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Ruler
  • Cutting Mat
  • Iron
  • Scissors for cutting webbing
  • BERNINA Sewing Machine (I used the B 790 PLUS)

Assembling the Collar

Now, let’s bring all the components together and create a unique collar for your furry friend!

  1. Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together, and press it.
  2. Open up the fabric strip and fold one half down to the fold line, pressing it again.
  3. Repeat the process with the other half of the fabric strip.
  4. Fold the strip in half once more and press it.
  5. Insert the webbing into the fold, ensuring it is centered.
  6. Use Wonder Clips to secure all layers of the fabric and webbing.
  7. Using a Jeans foot #8D and a 90/14 Jeans Needle, top stitch along both long sides of the collar, securing the fabric and webbing together.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Now that the collar base is complete, it’s time to incorporate the finishing touches.

  1. Attach the D-ring to one end of the collar and half of the Parachute Buckle to the other end, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Fold the end of the collar over, ensuring no raw edges are exposed, and fold it over again.
  3. Adjust the positioning of the D-ring and buckle, leaving about 2 inches of fabric beyond their connection point.
  4. Secure the folded end, along with the D-ring and buckle, using Wonder Clips.
  5. Stitch through all the layers, beginning between the buckle and the D-ring, and create a straight stitch across the collar.
  6. Stitch a box shape with an X through the center, reinforcing the fabric near the D-ring.

Complete the other end of the collar by attaching the Strap Adjuster and the remaining half of the Parachute Buckle, and secure them with stitching.
