How to Create Stylish DIY Dog Collar Bows for Your Furry Friend

How to Create Stylish DIY Dog Collar Bows for Your Furry Friend

If you’re a pet lover like me, you know how much fun it is to sew for our four-legged companions. Today, I’m thrilled to share a tutorial on how to make DIY dog collar bows that will make your pooch (or even your cat!) look absolutely adorable.

Two Bow Variations for Every Pet’s Style

In this post, you’ll learn how to create two different types of bows that are both super easy to sew. The first is a big bow, perfect for a girly pup or a cute addition to a new puppy’s wardrobe. Just imagine a big red bow on your furry friend during Christmas! This bow has a sailor-style design with pointed tails, adding an extra touch of charm.

The second variation is a bow tie style attachment, ideal for a dapper dog. This necktie-inspired bow looks incredibly cute around your dog’s neck, especially when made with plaid or polka dot fabric for a sleek and stylish look.

What makes these bows special is the elastic on the back, ensuring a secure fit that always looks great and doesn’t droop.

The Versatility of Dog Collar Bows

While our focus is on creating bows for dog collars, these patterns can be used for an array of projects. You can use them to make hair bows for kids or as accessories to attach to a bag or dress. The possibilities are endless!

Download the DIY Dog Collar Bows Pattern

To get started, download the pattern for the dog collar bows. The pattern includes two sizes for the sailor bow design: large for bigger dogs or gift bows, and small for smaller dog breeds or even cats (though, let’s be honest, most cats won’t tolerate it!). These patterns also feature elastic loops on the back, making them easy to attach to your dog’s collar.

I recommend using thicker paper, such as cardstock, especially if you plan on making multiple bows. The pages overlap, as shown in the diagram on the website, so be sure to trim and tape them together.

Creating a Sailor Bow for a Dog Collar

Let’s start with the sailor bow design. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Cut the fabric and interfacing according to the pattern pieces.
  2. Sew the elastic to the Back 2 pieces, top and bottom, using a narrow stitch length. Then sew the larger piece (Back 1) to the top and bottom of the Back 2 piece, with the elastic sandwiched between them. Backstitch over the elastic for added security.
  3. Fuse interfacing to the back of all the fabric pieces.
  4. Repeat the previous steps with the other Back 1 and Back 2 pieces. Press them open and sew them to the sides of the Bow Main rectangle.
  5. Open and press the bow well.
  6. Fold up the bottom of the bow pieces to match the top edges and sew into a tube along the top. Then turn it right side out, treating the raw edges with fray check.
  7. Fold the sides of the bow to the back and glue them down in the middle.
  8. For the tail piece, fold it in half and sew from point to point, leaving a small opening in the middle. Clip the corners, trim the seam allowance, and turn the tail right side out.
  9. Press under the edges of the bow middle and use a glue gun to secure them.
  10. Line up the three components of the bow (tail, bow, and bow middle) and pinch them together. Wrap the middle piece around them and glue the ends at the back. Make sure not to get any glue on the front of the bow.
  11. Trim the excess of the middle piece and use the glue gun to hold the bow and tail in place.
  12. Ta-da! Slip the elastic loops over your dog’s collar, and your sailor bow is ready to shine!
